Why Would Your Cat Need Surgery?

Your cat may need surgery for a number of reasons. Spaying or neutering to prevent pregnancy requires a surgical operation. Your cat may also need surgery for:

• dental extractions
• to repair broken bones or skin lacerations
• to remove a foreign object from the body (such as kidney stones)
• or to repair a diseased joint (orthopedic surgery)

Your veterinarian may even suggest exploratory surgery to confirm a specific condition or verify the damage it’s caused. Things to Remember About Your Cat’s Surgery

Pre-Surgery

We will call you the night before to confirm your pet’s appointment and give you a few instructions you will need and happily answer all your questions.

The morning of surgery, one of the technicians will review the procedure, the estimate and again answer any remaining questions you may have.   Once ready, the technician will take your pet back and let him/ her set up and comfortable prior to the procedure.  Time is allowed for your pet to settle in prior to any pre-surgical blood work or placement of an intravenous catheter for administration of medications and fluids during surgery.  Your pets ease and comfort are our primary concern.

During Surgery

Pain management is essential for your pet’s comfort and success, and our staff is highly trained in all aspects of pain management modalities. During surgery we will closely monitor your pet’s vitals to insure a smooth anesthetic event.

Use of Anesthesia

At Central Texas Cat Hospital, we use general anesthesia to keep your pet immobile during a surgical procedure and to ensure he or she feels no discomfort or pain. Anesthesia is administered by professionals and tailored to your cat’s needs for that specific surgical procedure. Before using anesthesia, we’ll give your cat a complete physical exam, review medical history, and take blood tests as precautionary measures to minimize any risks of the anesthesia itself. We’ll also monitor the effects of the anesthesia carefully throughout your pet’s surgery to ensure there are no problems.

Post-Surgery

Following surgery, again, your pet’s comfort is essential; therefore, the technician will ensure a warm, comfortable recovery cage with all your pets needs met.

Following recovery, the doctor and/or technician will call you and let you know your pet is doing well and review the procedure.  A post-operative treatment plan will be made and we will get your pet home to you as soon as possible.

At Home Post-Operative Care

After a major surgery, cats need time and space to heal.  Your pet will need a warm, cozy spot indoors, free of distractions, to rest and recuperate. A dog crate, small bathroom, or laundry room may suffice to restrict your cat’s physical activity during recovery time. Once your cat is ready to go home, we’ll provide you with post-op instructions for nursing him or her back to health. We’ll prescribe medications, if needed, to minimize pain, control inflammation, and speed up recovery. We’ll also schedule follow-up visits to monitor your cat’s recovery progress.
